Australia Awards in Africa Short Course: GIS and Mining James Cook University and University of Witswatersrand

In October 2011 the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at JCU won an AusAid tender (via GRM International) to provide a five week short course in Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and mining. The course was designed to be delivered in partnership with AfricaArray and the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg and private consultants in South Africa. The first course was delivered in May-June 2012 and a combined second and third course in Sept-October 2012; with courses being taught in Johannesburg, with Wits providing a venue, language support, and logistical help. JCU staff designed the course with content being delivered by staff from JCU and Wits, and Jo’burg-based consultants to the mining industry. Coordination of the programme at Wits has been in the hands of the AfricaArray office housed in the School of Geosciences.

Feedback from the courses to date has been very positive with candidates wanting more. In 2013, the JCU-Wits partnership under the auspices of EGRU and AfricaArray will be delivering two further short courses in GIS and Mining and we are hoping to tender for further short courses to replicate our success to date.
